USAR Systems, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Semtech Corporation, is a leading producer of input device and power management electronics for notebook, handheld and vertical systems and information appliances. Input device products include pre-programmed ICs for keyboards, mice, touch screens, etc., as well as complete embedded mouse modules for OEM integration. System management products include ACPI-compliant embedded controllers with integrated keyboard encoder and other HID functionality as well as Smart Battery-related products. Geared chiefly for the portable and hand-held market, USAR holds patents on several low-power implementation methods, providing ICs with the lowest power consumption available on the market.

History
In 1987, a group of scientists from Columbia University and Bellcore Labs formed a company to develop a new type of Point of Sales terminal. This led to the creation of a POS terminal utilizing PC architecture - the first of its kind. Recognizing the need for off-the-shelf IC products that would allow a PC to be utilized in applications beyond the traditional desktop, the company, now called USAR Systems, introduced its first product, the K25C81 KeyCoder™ keyboard encoder IC, in January of 1991. Since then USAR has expanded its operations to provide what is now the fullest line of input device and power management ICs in the industry.

USAR was acquired by Semtech Corporation in December of 1999. Semtech is a leading provider of high-quality, analog/mixed-signal ICs for power management, overvoltage and transient protection, automated test equipment, and communications. Publicly traded since 1967, Semtech is listed on the Nasdaq National Market under the symbol SMTC.

The merger of Semtech and USAR will leverage both companies’ achievements in bringing lower cost, space-saving, power-efficient and highly functional ICs solutions to market for the demanding portable computing marketplace. By providing highly integrated analog-digital-firmware expertise and products, Semtech can now offer its customers sub-system solutions that minimize internal development costs and product management time, enable the lowest possible power consumption and speed product time-to-market with assured interface-standard compliance
