Leyden Energy, formerly known as Mobius Power Inc., is a leading R&D and manufacturing company that has perfected a patent on uniform cell heat distribution resulting in greater thermal stability and a high energy density lithium-ion battery. The patented Leyden technology addresses many of the deficiencies of traditional rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Its combination of HF-free electrolytes and a unique collector material create a chemistry-agnostic formulation that can be used as a platform technology with all known lithium-ion systems.


The Leyden lithium-ion battery solves problems that have plagued and limited the lithium-ion industry for decades; battery degradation due to high heat exposure and safety concerns. Along with high temperature performance, the Leyden lithium-ion cell is able to provide extended cycle life, and, with thermal stability, added safety.


Leyden has demonstrated performances of their technology in 18650 (2.2ah) cylindrical cells as well as in pouch cells, in the range of 2.4ah-10ah . When used in pouch form, Leyden’s patented cell technology exhibits an additional benefit,, that is, minimal to no gassing. This eliminates another problem of pouch cell designs — the pouch ballooning effect, By eliminating the need to compensate for pouch expansion, higher energy density and safer designs can be achieved.

There are a couple of product and sytem properties that make Leyden unique

High thermal stability
Because of the material used in Leyden’s lithium-ion battery, the overall thermal property of the cell demonstrates no internal hot spots like those seen in thermal imaging test data. This benefit is especially significant for applications needing to move heat away from the battery systems. Thermal uniformity enhances Leyden’s ability to achieve high cycle life while at the same time withstanding high temperatures.


Higher safety
The patented Leyden technology is the combination of HF-free electrolytes and a unique collector material which allows for a higher temperature safety margin compared to other lithium-ion cells. Leyden cells can be tested to 234 degrees C during our internal safety tests before cell venting occurs.


Uniform cell and battery module temperatures
In HEV, PHEV and EV applications, uniform cell and battery module temperatures are critical to longer battery life which in turn is essential to bringing scale to commercial applications. Cell thermal stability is also essential to product safety, and clearly gives our customers an advantage in bringing new products to market.


No gas emissions; less cell ballooning

Leyden Energy, formerly known as Mobius Power, Inc., was founded in 2007, under the uniform cell heat distribution technology and patent acquired from chemical manufacturer E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company (Dupont). The Dupont technology served as the foundation for subsequent Leyden research which perfected the patent and led to the company’s current chemical formulation. The successful development of this lithium-ion technology has made possible a heat resistant, energy-dense lithium ion battery which is now Leyden’s core offering.

Aakar Patel

President & CEO

Aakar has extensive executive leadership experience across a variety of industries including battery design and manufacturing, computer hardware and semiconductors.


Prior to joining Leyden Energy, Aakar served as the COO of Battery-Biz, a leading U.S.-based distributor of after-market rechargeable batteries, adapters and chargers for portable electronic devices, where he oversaw several departments. He was instrumental in expanding into several vertical markets, significantly increased the company’s profitability and successfully established overseas manufacturing operations. Before Battery-Biz, Aakar was with USAR where he played a pivotal role in its acquisition by Semtech(SMTC). Prior to USAR, he spent ten years at Duracell where he developed and launched several laptop and camcorder products and successfully established its U.S. manufacturing operations.


Aakar holds key patents related to battery technology and has co-authored the Smart Battery Specifications l (SMBus), widely published in industry journals. He holds a BS in Electrical Engineering and an Executive MBA from the University of Connecticut.


Peter Nieh

Managing Director, Lightspeed Venture Partners

Peter is a founder of Lightspeed, which invests in cleantech, software and the Internet. He has fourteen years of venture capital experience and seven years of operating experience.


Prior to Lightspeed, Peter worked in business development and product marketing at General Magic, a startup that, before the emergence of the Web, pioneered the development of e-commerce and electronic media services by partnering with the world's largest telecommunications service providers and consumer electronics companies. He also managed Acer's portable PC business in North America launching its first laptop PC products. Before Acer, Peter was a strategy consultant at Bain & Company where he worked predominantly with high-technology clients on product, sales and distribution strategies. While an undergraduate at Stanford, he worked at Apple Computer where he helped to develop the power management system for Apple's first portable computer.


Peter holds a BS in Electrical Engineering, an AB in Economics and an MBA from Stanford University.


Wade Woodson

Managing Director, Sigma Partners

Wade joined Sigma in 1987 and became a general partner in 1990. In the two decades ince, he has helped numerous startup technology companies grow into mature, high-value enterprises. With a background in electrical engineering and law, his experience has spanned several technology sectors — from semiconductors to communications services to enterprise software. In 1993, he made the venture industry’s first investment in the Internet.


Prior to joining Sigma, Wade worked for four years in the technology and emerging companies departments of the Cooley Godward law firm.


He holds an undergraduate degree from Stanford University in electrical engineering, a law degree from Harvard Law School and an M.B.A. from the University of Cali.


Andrew Kau

Managing Director, Walden International

Andrew joined Walden International in 1994. Prior to his tenure there, he was President of Chemical Technologies Ventures. He was also a management consultant at Strategic Planning Associates and Booz, Allen and Hamilton. Earlier in his career he was a research scientist at Systems Planning Corporation and a VLSI semiconductor engineer at IBM.


Andrew holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from Brown University and an MBA from the University of Virginia.

Marc Juzkow

Chief Technical Officer

Renowned battery inventor and technology industry veteran, Marc is an industry leader with unique skill set combining lithium ion battery and ultracapacitor R&D, application engineering, sales, marketing and executive management. For both startups to industry leaders, Marc has designed and built a variety of world class products. In the field of lithium batteries and ultracapacitors, Marc has worked for EaglePicher, PolyStor, Cooper-Bussmann (PowerStor), Qynergy and OMG (cobalt supplier), and started three companies: VoltSource (consulting), UNCAP (ultracapacitors) and Mobile Power Solutions (independent battery testing).


Marc began his battery career at Moli Energy in Vancouver, Canada in rechargeable lithium battery research. Subsequently, he managed the product development and evaluation teams working on development of the first lithium-ion cell in North America. Later, he assembled a sales and marketing group to commercialize Moli’s lithium-ion technology.


Marc has spoken at premier international events including______. He has published more than 35 publications and holds broad standing patents in battery technology.


He holds an Executive MBA and an MS in Chemistry from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, BC.


John Beck

Chief Technology Officer

John Beck brings over 30 years of experience in financial management, strategic planning and execution for technology firms. For the past five years, John has been the acting CFO for many venture-backed early stage companies in life sciences, fabless semiconductor, software, hardware systems and services. John has served as General Manager and CFO consultant with The Brenner Group, and as CFO for Silicon Bandwidth, nDSP (including a successful M&A with Pixelworks), Sigma Designs, Augeo Software, Meta-Software, Sellectek, RayLAN, Optimem and Spectra Logic subsidiaries of Cipher Data Products and Minton Company. Previously, John held senior audit positions at Ernst & Young and KPMG Peat Marwick certified public accounting firms.


He is a licensed California C.P.A. with a BS (cum laude) in Commerce with accounting emphasis, from Santa Clara University.

Vice President, Business Development

Nick brings to Leyden Energy over a decade of leadership and experience in the semiconductor and lithium-ion battery industries, with a successful record leading technical sales team, global sales efforts and business development operations. Prior to Leyden Energy, he helped build a successful sales program at Boston Power, a privately held company, in which he identified and educated promising markets to the superiority and promise of breakthrough lithium ion battery technologies.Prior to working with Boston Power, Nick served in executive business development roles at NEC, Semtech, and International Rectifier. At the latter company, he was responsible for leading a technical sales team focused on Fortune 100 OEMs and for promoting advanced digital and analog integrated circuit systems to the personal computing, automotive, industrial and military markets. Earlier in his career, Nick designed power line carrier communications systems and products for New York based military defense contractors.

Jun Liu

Vice President, Research & Development

Jun brings to Leyden Energy broad research experience on battery chemistry and a record of improving the properties and safety of battery products.


Prior to joining Leyden Energy, Jun developed and improved the performance of new cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries as applied to cell phones and laptops at SoBright Technology Co. Before SoBright, he led a research project team jointly sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and three major American automobile companies to develop a high-power lithium-ion battery for application in hybrid electric vehicles. Earlier in his career, Jun served as a researcher and professor at several universities and institutes in China, France and Germany.


Jun holds a broad collection of awards and standing patents in battery technology. Jun has a BS and an MS in Chemistry from Peking University, in Peking, China and a Ph.D. in Material Science from University of Bordeaux, France.


Richard Steele

Director of Engineering

Richard has more than 20 years of extensive global manufacturing, design, testing, and management experience. He has worked in global security on aeronautics, missiles and fire controls and on a space launch; in battery pack design and manufacturing, and the biotechnology industries.


Prior to joining Leyden Energy, Richard was involved in the biotechnology industry where he is credited with the successful release of the Health Buddy System at Health Hero Network, a division of Bosch. the production enhancement and cost reduction of Flow Cytometry equipment at Guava Technologies.


Prior his involvement in bio technology, Richard founded Simplo USA, a manufacturer of high quality custom battery packs for laptop, PDAs, handheld test equipment, and cell phones. At Simplo, he oversaw development of the technology for lithium ion protection PCBs, SMBus fuel gauges and special application PCBs. Earlier in his career, Richard held various engineering positions on aerospace flight hardware environment test.


Richard holds a BS in Electronic Engineering from DeVry University.
